Quick hits
Last year’s youth that hindered West Carroll in 2025 could be something that helps them in 2026. With 15 total starters back, the team should be noticeably more experienced this year.
Nick Cobb is a young coach that’s been connected to winners his entire football career. He played at Dresden and was on the first team that made it to the state championship game in 2011. He played college ball at Bethel when the Wildcats were routinely competing for conference championships and making deep playoff runs. In his coaching career, he’s coached at Dresden, McKenzie and Peabody before coming with his predecessor Jay Taylor to Atwood last year. He was announced as head coach on April 27, so he’s one of the newest head coaches in the region.
While the program was already reeling with a 1-9 season last year and then losing one player to a transfer and a couple more to injury, Cobb said one positive that’s come out of those situations is seeing the rest of the team come together and more guys step up to fill in the gaps left by the departed/injured players.
Participation is up so far this summer with more than 30 guys showing up for summer workouts, and if a lot of them can pan out into dependable players in the season, that depth could go a long way to producing more success in 2026.
Another reason the War Eagles will have depth this year they didn’t have last year is because toward the end of the season, a handful of baseball players who cared about their friends on the football team and wanted to help somehow all volunteered to show up for practice and do nothing but dress out and play scout team. They enjoyed it and have learned the game this offseason and will be part of the team this year.
Position groups
Offensive line — The five guys who started from Week 7 on last year are back this year as the projected starters up front in 2026. Cole Mueller started every game at left tackle and was a force for the War Eagles. Left guard Noah Cecchini played some at guard and center last year. James Ford has been challenged to make calls on front from the center position as he’s grown a good bit as a player in the offseason. Ryan Forrest appears to be the right guard after having dropped 30 pounds and gotten way quicker. Braden Arnold will be the right tackle at 6-feet-3-inches and 310 pounds as a junior. He struggled with footwork last year but has improved greatly. Emmett Ramsey and Layton Wilson are a couple of freshmen who have impressed early on and could help this year.
Backfield — Alex Cavness is a tough and smart player at fullback that could play any position for the team and loves contact. Parker Newman looks like he’ll be quarterback as a sophomore and has grown mentally and physically as he’s stepping up to lead. Caleb Vermillion played some quarterback last year but looks like he’ll be part of the running back committee this time around with freshman Chris Pruett and J.W. Rushing, a transfer from Jackson Christian. Keegan Miller will play tight end and has made a good bit of gains in the weight room.
Receivers — This could be a strength or a weakness as the entire group is new from last year. Jaden Rogers is a freshman that moved to town from Martin, and Skyler Wilson is a sophomore transfer from South Side. They look to be the outside receivers, while R.Q. Thompson will be the slot receiver.
Defensive line — Senior Landon Wilson will be the nose tackle, and a lot of the slots around him up front will be a rotation of linemen based on keeping everybody as fresh as possible while trying not to give anything up on defense. Wilson has gone up 75 to 100 pounds on every lift in the offseason, so he should be more of a force in 2026. Cecchini, Mueller, Ford and others will all be part of this group.
Linebackers — Caleb Martin never missed a beat as a sophomore middle linebacker, so he’s back as a junior in that spot. Alex Cavness and Rushing will double up on the linebacker corps as they will be part of a rotation.
Secondary — Thompson will be the strong safety, and Skyler Wilson will be free safety as they’re both proven ball hawks that can go get it. Summer has been an open competition for cornerback duties. Braden Reese led the team in tackles from that position. Briggs West, Rogers, Martin and Pruett could all be a part of the group and are competing for those spots. Keegan Miller plays nickelback.
Special teams — Parker Newman does the kicking and punting along with PATs. Emmett Ramsey loves to kick field goals over the post, so he’s doing that. Cole Mueller is one of the better ones in the region at long snapper, and he’ll be a third-year starter there. Thompson will get some reps at returning along with Pruett and Skyler Wilson.
