Quick hits
The first official season of the TSSAA’s one-time transfer rule has hit Dresden fairly hard in the summer as four players who were expected to be contributors for the Lions and probably all starters in at least one position opted to go to other schools outside Weakley County.
Head coach Justin Cruse has been a head football coach for nine seasons so far (seven at Ripley). In those nine seasons, his teams have made it to at least the second round of the playoffs.
Three of Dresden’s four non-region opponents made the playoffs last year and won a combined six playoff games.
Position groups
Offensive line — Jacoby Sutton is moving in from tight end to center. Reed Killebrew started some at left guard last year. He could continue playing there starting full-time, but a couple of transfers have altered the Lions’ plans, which could move him elsewhere up front. Carson Jackson is slated to play right guard, and Wooden Browning is the team’s biggest player and slated to play right tackle.
Backfield — Nathan Spalding could be put into the starting role at quarterback, and Ross Cally has done well in the weight room and will get more playing time at running back after some positions opened up above him on the depth chart. Senior Calvin Artis returning and Damani Dickerson can give the Lions some quality reps as well.
Receivers — This group has gotten better in the offseason with a lot of the guys growing up in the weight room. While transfers have removed some players from the Lions’ roster, they’ve also gained some, and this area is the main beneficiary of that. Aiden Flore, Anastio Scenario, John Reese Allman, Terrance Nelson and Caden Mount are all guys that could help out at some point this season.
Defensive line — There’s one returning starter in this group, and that’s Jacob Sutton. Other guys who will be key contributors are Bruyson Hames, Reed Killebrew, Carson Moorefield and Wooden Browning.
Linebackers — Carson Jackson, Tanner Lamb, Ross Cali and Elliott Staff are all penciled in to provide some quality experience and athleticism to the linebacking corps.
Secondary — Landon Cantrell and Wyatt Davis are returning starters that showed promise and growth in the offseason at the safety position. Aiden Flore will play at cornerback, and Carson Ladezma will see time at safety too.
Special teams — Aiden Sides will be the kicker and could punt as well. Agnosio, Nelson and Caiden Mount will all help at some point in returning kicks and punts. Longsnapper was a continued question for the Lions.
