Quick hits
Last year was the first time in four years Humboldt football made the playoffs.
The 2025 season was also the first season that head coach Hayden Williams was able to see definite improvement on the roster as far as depth goes as his recruitment of the hallways paid off with nearly 40 players on the roster.
The Vikings had more than 40 players showing up for offseason workouts, giving the team a chance at even more quality depth.
Running back Edward Agnew grew up in Humboldt and returns after a couple of seasons playing in Trenton with Peabody. He’ll be a boost for the offense right away.
Position groups
Offensive line — Four starters return, and they’re still young with only one of those returning starters being a senior and three of this year’s starters are sophomores. Depth shouldn’t be an issue as there are a total of 17 linemen on the team.
Backfield — Jaydon Champion will be the new starting quarterback who has some experience with three starts last year. Agnew will be the starting running back with a couple of freshmen moving up from middle school fighting for playing time and the spot on the second team.
Receivers — Darion Taylor and Tyon Campbell each recorded more than 1,000 yards receiving last year. Williams is looking for a couple more guys to prove themselves to be reliable to rotate into the other receiver slots.
Defensive line — A.J. Young will be the senior leader for this group, while Elijah Avery will bring a noticeable amount more strength to the defensive end position this year after a big year in the weight room. Jaylen Hampton is a junior moving up from linebacker that can make an impact in the trenches.
Linebackers — Three of four starters are back this year including Campbell, who was the team’s leading tackler in 2025. Cameron Cole is back as well. Champion and Agnew will line up on defense some to give some depth and speed to that group.
Secondary — This will be the most experienced group as all starters are back from last year including Taylor, who’s in his third year starting and took on a key leadership role making sure everyone was lined up pre-snap.
Special teams — Kicker and punters were still positions the Vikings were figuring out in the summer, but with Taylor and Agnew back, their return slots appear to be in solid condition.
