Quick hits

The Pioneers’ current losing streak is at 13 games as their most recent victory happened on Oct. 4, 2024 against Stewart County.

Head coach Kyle Pack is a graduate of Gibson County who’s come up through the program, got his degree, coached middle school football in Martin (and coached both Ty and Graham Simpson before they made it to high school and the NFL) and returned home to help build his alma mater up.

Pack discussed the team last year and how keeping enough guys in practice through the year with injuries combined with some players quitting right before the season gave him a different level of respect for the guys who stuck it out and finished the year. He appreciated that commitment to the program, and is glad to see more boys in the high school coming out for the team.

The main issue for Gibson County is that as they’re down in Class 2A (they’ve been in 3A at different points in the last decade or two), they’re in this perfect storm of West Tennessee perennial powers competing against each other for the playoffs.

With six returning starters on each side of the ball, the experience on this team at the beginning of the season is relatively high compared to returning experience for past teams in the program.

Position groups

Offensive line — Owen Pack is a three-year starter as a junior at center. Nate Cash will be a guard. Sophomore Torah Skinner will be left guard after having had a good spring game. He started some toward the end of last year.

Backfield — Braylon Griffey will be the starting running back, and Kyron Perry will be the backup. Noah Cash will be the H-back/fullback. There are actually a couple choices for quarterback as Sloan McCormick transferred in during the offseason, and Ryder Garwin is a freshman with a good amount of potential.

Receivers — This group is looking good as Isaiah Rice is a four-year player and three-year starter. Trey Bailey will be a junior who’s been starting since late in his freshman year. Jacayden Ivey is back this year along with Perry, who will line up primarily at receiver and move to running back when needed.

Defensive line — Noah Cash is a strong athlete that can bench 350 pounds and squat 500. He’s also helped as another coach during spring after suffering a foot injury early in spring ball, but he should be OK by Week 1.

Linebackers — Griffey and Ivey will be the outside linebackers. They’re both seniors.

Secondary — Rice will play safety, and he’s one of the toughest athletes Pack has ever coached because he gets up no matter how hard he’s hit.

Special teams — Owen Pack will be the long-snapper. Rice will probably be a returner, and Griffey will probably be the other one. Kicking and punting duties were still up in the air late in preseason.
