Quick hits
The Wildcats finished 5-5 on the season, but they were one or two defensive stops in a couple games from finishing 7-3. And both of those close losses were region games, so winning one of those games would’ve probably meant going to the playoffs.
The good news for that is in Bush’s first three years of leading the program, it’s shown improvement each year. They went 0-9 in 2023, 1-9 in 2024 and then 5-5 last year.
Bush is from the Mobile area of Alabama, which is a hotbed for recruiting for a lot of the top programs in the Power 4 conferences of NCAA FBS.
The Wildcats only have four home games this year, but the good part about that is they get three of their road games out of the way before their home-opener. Two of those games are into Memphis, and the second of the three is up to Atwood to play West Carroll.
The team lost a few key players to transfers with a couple of them going to Jackson with family, but there are still a combined 15 starters returning that should bring quality experience with them.
Position groups
Offensive line — Xavier Jones will be the leader for this group in more ways than one. He leads by example. He’s vocal when he needs to be, but also, he’s versatile enough that Bush described him as a Swiss army knife because of all the different things he can do.
Backfield — Justin Price will be the starting quarterback as he has been the last two years. He completed 72 percent of his passes last year, 100-for-134 for 1,820 yards. Braylon Walker and Reynaldeus Raimey will be the main guys carrying the ball in the ground game.
Receivers — Layquan Armour is the main returner at wide receiver, who had 39 receptions for 1,135 yards and 11 touchdowns. Deangelo Kee is another one that will be a good target for Price to throw to.
Defensive line — Elon Weathers is a defensive end that transferred in from Covington. Dylan Douglas is a 3-technique who had 48 tackles, six for loss and five sacks. Cardarius Llewellyn led the region with seven sacks.
Linebackers — Hendrix Williams is the top returner after a season good enough last year to be named all-region. He also helps in the receiving corps on the offensive side.
Secondary — Armour was also a leader here last year with 47 total tackles, one tackle for loss and three interceptions.
Special teams — Walker is punter and kicker. Parker Lattimore is the main returner along with Kee and Raimey.
