Quick hits
South Fulton’s start to the season won’t happen until Week 2 since their open date is in Week 1. So that means once they start playing games, they have no bye week.
The three teams South Fulton lost to last year won a combined 25 games as two of those losses were to teams that won their region with regular season records of 8-2.
Clanton said at the Sports731 Network’s media day in July that slow starts were something that concerned him about the team all last year, and one thing the coaching staff has emphasized this year is not waiting until the second half to really play their best ball.
The players that represented South Fulton at the media day were very complimentary of the way Clanton runs his program with a player-oriented focus, which motivates them to play even harder for him.
Position groups
Offensive line — Four starters are back up front. A lot of strength is coming back too. Andrew Bradley was a steady player at center last year. Austin Bradley is back at left tackle. Bryce Dickson is back at right tackle, and Gavin Dickson is playing one of the guard positions. Jackson Williams will probably be that fifth starter at th either guard position.
Backfield — The Red Devils will have a trio of running backs carrying the ball in Ian Lawrence, Trevor Stutsen and Parker Dowdy. All three are capable of carrying the football, and Clanton wants to do that to split time and keep each one healthy. Grant Joyner threw for 900 yards last year as a sophomore quarterback, and he’s been a quality leader throughout the offseason. Brady Parnell is an H-back/fullback type player that started at HB last year after a senior went down with an injury early on. Jonathan Dawson was a freshman that stepped up to execute when needed.
Receivers — There are several players who have potential to make an impact at some point. Mason Parrish played slot last year, and the coaches are looking for him to have a big year. Jameson Barclay got a little time in the slot. Anthony Ross didn’t play last year, but he’s out this year and has speed and potential. Logan Copeland played last year as a junior and has really developed over summer done good job catching and running routes. There are also high hopes for a freshman named Jayden Puefide.
Defensive line — Sam Southernland will be the nose tackle, while Gavin Dickson and Jackson Williams primarily play the end positions. Austin Bradley and Andrew Bradley will be playing the other tackle positions.
Linebackers — Parker Dowdy started out as an outside linebacker last year but moved to inside linebacker after some injuries happened. He’ll be back at inside linebacker along with Puefide. Lawrence is returning as an outside linebacker, while Colton Herring and Brady Parnell both will be rolling in and out at the other outside linebacker position.
Secondary — Trevor Stutsen was an all-region cornerback last year. Mason Parrish was safety and was a solid player quarterbacks tried to avoid. Barclay will be stepping in for the other safety, while Anthony Ross is potentially the other guy playing cornerback.
Special teams — Kicking and punting duties were still up in the air early in the summer after both kickers graduated last year. Andrew Bradley will be long snapper. Parker Dowdy was working at punter, while Gage Hancock and Logan Copeland were working for K. Lawrence, Parrish, Ross or Stutsen will get returning duties.
