Quick hits
While injuries were a problem for the Falcons in 2025, they might not have been such a factor if the team had more than players on the roster. They were down to fewer than 20 at one point last year. They had about 30 showing up for summer workouts this year.
Hunter Short was an assistant coach in the late 2010s when the program was one of the standard-setters for all of Class 1A, including winning the championship in 2019. So he’s seen what a championship team in Tiptonville looks like.
While Lake County traditionally has a workhorse running back the team might hang all its offensive success hopes on most years, this season appears to be one of the exceptions as they will be a running-back-by-committee type of team.
Short said at the Sports731 Network’s media day in Martin in July that practice has gone a lot more efficiently so far this year since they’re able to line 11 against 11 during team work and drills.
Position groups
Offensive line — Greg Bishop is the only senior in the entire group, so he will need to be a leader. Acadian Parr is a sophomore who had a breakout season last year after suffering a torn ACL the year before as an eighth-grader. Javoisi Boyd is doing a better job this year on the mental side of line play, and Ja’kobe Clay is another sophomore who could be the most physically gifted player on the team at 6-feet-3-inches and 260 pounds.
Backfield — Nigel Clark and Randy Demo will probably split time at running back. Cade Lanier is returning as starting quarterback after starting every game last year as a sophomore. K.J. Avery could get some looks as a fullback, and Gunner Morris will be back there in certain situations.
Receivers — This group will have more depth and experience than it did a year ago. Russell Reagan and Camden Lanier progressed well through the offseason. The group as a whole isn’t as fast as maybe the coaching staff would like, but they know how to get open.
Defensive line — Javoisi Boyd was the region’s Defensive Lineman of the Year last year as a sophomore. Bishop, Parr and Clay will rotate in, and Aaiden Johnson will get some playing time too.
Linebackers — Nigel Clark will call the defense from the middle linebacker position. Randy Demo led the team in tackles and was an all-region player. K.J. Avery had a quality spring and played his best game against Halls in a scrimmage. Camden Lanier will be an outside linebacker who’s grown up since last year and will probably play more aggressively.
Secondary — Cade Lanier and Russell Ragan will be safeties as juniors. Crockett will play some cornerback. Dakahi Clark is a guy that didn’t play last year but had a good offseason and will be a sophomore. Aiden Hudson is a transfer from Obion County that has done well too since joining the team.
Special teams — Landon Crockett is returning as kicker after having a handful of touchbacks and was 11-for-15 in PATs. Aiden Johnson will be the longsnapper. Demo, Cade Lanier, Ragan and Clark will share returning duties.
