Quick hits
Pitt, who’s an alumnus of Greenfield, has quietly turned the Yellowjackets into one of the more consistent small-school programs on this end of the state. They’ve made the playoffs five of the last eight years he’s led the team, making it to the second round three of those five.
The loss of QB Easton Sullivan to graduation will be bad for at least two sports programs at Greenfield as he was one of the top-rated baseball players in the state in Class 1A. Pitt said the football program is missing his leadership.
As good of a season as Greenfield had in 2025, they were very close to an even better year as their 7-5 season was a total of six points away from three more wins, which would’ve been a 10-2 season and a second-place finish in the region, which might’ve changed the playoff finish.
When discussing specific players, Greenfield might have the most drastic of a change for a player all offseason as Wyatt Haggle, who played left tackle on the offensive line last year, is moving to slot receiver.
Position groups
Offensive line — There are three starters back up front with Shane Crawford back at left tackle, Braden Madison was the center last year as a freshman in their heavy set and Trey Morris is back at right guard. Tanner Massey and Caden Bauer could both play right tackle at times, and they’re both over 350 pounds and 6-feet-3-inches tall.
Backfield — Knox Liggett looks to be the starter at quarterback, which is what he did in junior high and has played mainly free safety while waiting his turn to lead the offense. Jared McMullin could also get some snaps in certain formations. Weston Porter is back at running back after getting more than 1,000 yards last year with his rare combo of power running ability and his ability to get around the corner.
Receivers — Junior Jerry Foley is a team leader who will play outside receiver. This will be his first year playing on offense as he’s typically been in the secondary in the past. Logan Griffin is also a defensive guy coming over to offense too on the other end of the offense. Brock King is a fast player who can run quality routes and be where the quarterback expects him to be. Kyle Beckett is the tight end who’s good at both blocking and pass catching. Haggle is making the move to slot receiver because he’s always been one of the fastest players on the team.
Defensive line — Haggle is a fast player, but he’s also one of the strongest/toughest players on the team with more of a linebacker’s body, so Pitt is using him up front on defense. Trey Morris will be the nose guard, and he spent some time there last year. Braden Madison will play the other tackle position, and the offensive linemen will rotate in and out to provide some depth.
Linebackers — Brock King and Carter Kelly had a lot of tackles last year, and Kelly learned to set the defense while focusing on that side of the ball this year. Kyle Beckett and Shane Crawford are both returning at outside linebacker after they both lined up for just about every snap last year.
Secondary — Liggett will be in the mix since he’s an experienced free safety. Logan Griffin will play free safety. Porter will be strong safety since he enjoys coming down into the box and making contact. Foley will be a cornerback and had six interceptions last year. CB - Gary Foley six interceptions good CB; Jerrick McMullen will also be a cornerback in addition to playing multiple roles on offense.
Special teams — Morris and Foley are two of the best kickers Pitt has ever coached. They will use Foley on field goals. LS - Madison is returning as the long snapper, while Porter, Foley and McMullen will share returning duties.
