Quick hits

The Tigers enter this season as the third for head coach Clay McMackins, and they showed definite improvement from Year 1 to Year 2, improving from one win to seven.

There’s one definitive difference in this year’s schedule. The Tigers will renew their rivalry with the other small school in Carroll County, West Carroll, after Bruceton and Fulton County (Kent.) opted not to meet this year.

Bruceton officially has an alum in the National High School Federation Hall of Fame as Patrick Willis, the legendary all-pro linebacker that went on to Ole Miss and the San Francisco 49ers, was inducted earlier this year. This came after Willis had already been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, College Football Hall of Fame and Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame.

The upcoming season has a period of six weeks in which Bruceton will play only one home game. The Tigers will travel to Wayne County before hosting Collinwood and then will have three road games at Liberty, McKenzie and McEwen. Their open week is in that stretch too.

Position groups

Offensive line — Zander Stepp is a four-year starter that started as center and moved over to right tackle. Jake Pardue is a freshman who will probably get the nod to start at right guard because of his size. Center position was still up in the air late in the summer with sophomore Liam Piersol possibly getting that spot if he didn’t land elsewhere. Chase Massey is an athlete that transferred when his family moved up from Mississippi and will play left tackle.

Backfield — Corbin Brown is the first option at running back. Daegan Collins is a little bulkier than Brown and can fill in the bruiser role in the run game. William Holder is a sophomore who will be the starting quarterback and spent a year learning from last year’s starter.

Receivers — Carter Lowe was the No. 4 option for the Tigers in receiving last year but worked his way up the check-down list as the season progressed. He’s one of the fastest and strongest players on the team. Tanner Walters is listed as playing six different positions but is one of the braver players, willing to go over the middle as a tight end or slot receiver to catch passes. There are other younger Tigers fighting for playing time.

Defensive line — Chase Massey will be the nose tackle and comes into the year with quality playing experience. Piersol and Jacob Schaeffer will be the ends, and both are returning starters as sophomores.

Linebackers — Three seniors are part of this group as Collins will be at will, Lowe at mike and Donny Tilley at sam. All three work together to get everyone lined up before the snap.

Secondary — Cam Foster is a junior that started last year at cornerback. Walters and Brown will each play the safety positions, and Braxton Hampton rejoins the team this year as a senior and will play cornerback.

Special teams — Walters will be the punter and kicker. Brown will be the main returner, and Easton Bullington is slated to handle long snapping.
