Quick hits
The Hornets had their second coaching change in program history in the spring after former coach Ben Johnson was announced in February as the new coach at Evangelical Christian School in Memphis. Derek Morales was named the new head coach a little more than a month later.
Morales was defensive coordinator last year at South Gibson and had been there for the last couple seasons after being the leader of the defense at Milan for a few years.
South Gibson had two alumni playing in the College Football Playoff last year against each other when Ole Miss played Tulane, which was also a rematch from a game they played in September. The Rebels won both meetings. South Gibson had a former player on each team - 2024 graduate Cam Clark is at Ole Miss and 2025 graduate Gabe Lovorn is at Tulane.
Between the coaching philosophies of Morales’ two predecessors - Johnson and Scott Stidham - the Hornets have always been known as run-heavy teams offensively. Morales said the personnel the team has this year with so many capable players that can play receiver made him and offensive coordinator Aaron Lowery decide to spread the offense out in 2026.
Morales is one of a large number of coaches in rural West Tennessee that played football at Lambuth University. After becoming the head coach, he was able to hire his old college defensive coach John Gore - who was previously at JCM - as the new defensive coordinator for the Hornets.
