Quick hits
Head coach Justin Dubriel became the head coach for the Choctaws last year after serving as an assistant for 11 years in Newbern beforehand. His first campaign at the helm came close to a region championship but did end with a runner-up finish and hosting a playoff game.
The Choctaws have kept their focus all offseason on simply trying to get 1 percent better each day, and that mindset has helped them keep focused on the task at hand with the intention of being prepared to go through the grind that is their season.
Dyer County has seven games in Region 7-4A, which has a legit argument of being the best region on this end of the state and possibly most competitive in the entire state. Their non-region games are perennial powers Dyersburg, Union City and USJ.
In addition to the tough schedule throughout the season, the Choctaws were in a situation last year going into Week 10 where they had the potential to host a playoff game and possibly win the region or not make the playoffs at all. The returning players said they just had to understand their assignment and what they needed to do to succeed in accomplishing the task at hand.
Graduation last spring was not good to the Choctaws as they lost eight starters on both sides of the ball.
Position groups
Offensive line — One starter is back in Charlie Madison. Landrick Hendricks, Corbin Colquick, Montreal Smith, Ryan Sartin, Wes Anderson, Ward Anderson and Channing Myers have all proven they can be a part of that rotation. Clark Ross or Brock Stanley are a couple of guys who can help out from the tight end position if not as a fullback.
Backfield — Landon White and River Johnson both have different capabilities when it comes to competing for the starting quarterback position. Bryce Fulton, Mark Taylor and Corey Taylor will be a part of the running back crew.
Receivers — Grant West and Keanthony Barbee will be quality athletes. Barbee did a lot for the team last year in the backfield when he got moved to running back after the starter got hurt early in the year, and he was actually named the region’s co-player of the year. Jaydon Seabourn, Jaxon Lay and Landon Kuykendoll will help here too.
Defensive line — This is one of the deeper rotations for the Choctaws with Marquisse Jones, Channing Myers, Charlie Madison, Kyle Ladd and Montreal Smith all being able to help here.
Linebackers — Grant and Barbee are the guys on the outside, while Oakland Joiner and Ethan Sweat will lead the way as inside linebackers while being backed up by Bryce Fulton, Eli Pollack and Jacob Stout.
Secondary — Seabourne and Peyton Sawyers will see time as cornerback, while Gage Canada will play a lot at safety.
Special teams — Bennett Black will be the punter. Dylan Rogers will be the kicker. Jayden Clark and Wes Anderson were the top candidates early in the summer to be the long-snapper, while Barbee and West will probably share returning duties.
