Quick hits
The Hawks are in a familiar situation in hitting the ground running in the summer - late in the offseason - with a new coach after the previous coach stepped down when the spring semester ended in late May.
Former Hawk player Dylan Evans is the man chosen to take the reins for the Hawks this season. He played for South Side in the late 1990s and early 2000s when South Side - led then by Jerry Hayes - was one of the top programs on this end of the state.
Terrion Reaves is a senior on the team and is the only member of that senior class that has stayed in the program all four years. He saw no point in transferring elsewhere when some of his classmates decided to go elsewhere.
Evans is glad to see similar commitment from the younger players on the team. The team is young compared to other teams in Region 7-4A, but he’s glad to see the sophomores and freshmen develop into quality players and young men.
Since Jerry Hayes coached the team for 23 seasons from 1985-2007, Evans will be the seventh head coach leading the program in the 19 years since (including Hayes coming back for two seasons after an abrupt coaching change late in the offseason). Of the previous six coaches, Hayes retiring again in December is the only coach of those six who’s separated from the program in the typical months of the offseason for coaching changes in the first two or three months after the season ends.
Position groups
Offensive line — Zyon Williams is a leader for this group and the overall team leader. Nicholas Sulock, Daniel Coley and Albert Skinner will all bring some experience to the front line as well.
Backfield — Jay Doss, Bransen Willis and Kylend Hayes will be running backs. Sophomore John David Carter will be the starting quarterback. Tyren Strode could also play some quarterback. Latoris Bond hybrid H-back that can be a bruiser back carrying the ball or block in the backfield. Bryson Ross will be a sophomore fullback.
Receivers — This skill group could be the team’s strongest asset going into the season with Strode and Ju’Quaveon Lewis being leaders. T. Caldwell and Gabriel Cox are a couple of freshmen who could help this year.
Defensive line — Williams will play both ways, and Alex Johnson, Ross and Danny Coley will fill out that front.
Linebackers — Doss and Willis will be the outside linebackers. Bond, Cox and Myles Phinnessee will handle the linebacking duties on the inside.
Secondary — Terrion Reaves, Hayes and Stokes will get a lot of the reps in the defensive backfield.
Special teams — Carter will be the kicker, while Stokes and Hayes will handle most of the returning. Scotland Jones will be the long snapper.
