Quick hits
When Milan head coach Wade Comer coaches his first game with the Bulldogs this season, it will officially make him the first Bulldog leader to coach longer than two seasons since legendary coach Jeff Morris retired after the 2017 season. Comer is the fourth coach since Morris.
Going back to his final few years at McKenzie, Comer’s football teams have made it to at least the semifinals each of the last five years. That’s two seasons ending in the semifinals, three seasons ending as runner-up and one state championship.
The Bulldogs added another game to the season this year after only playing nine games in the 2025 regular season. They added a home game on Oct. 23 against Nashville Collegiate Prep, a new football program that’s also playing Crockett County this year. The Bulldogs may win the bragging rights for longest road trip in rural West Tennessee, as they are set to go to Chattanooga Prep on Sept. 11.
The Bulldogs lost a large group of seniors off last year’s team that led them to a region championship and semifinal finish, but that’s something Comer said the team can’t worry about. He said the expectations at Milan are high enough that even in years like this, the program is expected to simply reload instead of rebuild, so that’s the plan for 2026.
For the past three years, West Tennessee football fans have gotten two occurrences of the Dog and Pony Show. Milan and Huntingdon, who’ve been in the same region the last three years, met in the regular season and again in the playoffs every year since 2023. Huntingdon won both matchups in 2023, and Milan took both in 2024. Last year they split with Milan winning big in the regular season and Huntingdon outlasting the Bulldogs in the state semifinals en route to the state championship.
Position groups
Offensive line — This may be the biggest hill to climb this offseason as they will be replacing four starters. The good news is Comer said there are some good-looking athletes playing up front for the Bulldogs, but they will have to learn quickly as a couple of starters will be freshmen.
Backfield — Comer likes the top three tailbacks on the depth chart with Carson Kelly coming back after a lot of reps last year, Ty Hollingsworth and Mason Taylor. Zack Summers will be the starting quarterback after having improved a lot in the past year. The quarterback position will be bigger this year without Peete to lean on.
Receivers — Comer said he feels good about this group with a number of guys that can catch the ball and are running good routes. He’d like to see another impact skill guy on the field, so we may expect to see some competition among the younger guys for more playing time.
Defensive line — Jacoby Wilkes got a lot of playing time as a sophomore as a role player, but his role will expand this year. There are a lot of holes to fill left by graduation. Along with Wilkes, Micah Austin and Mitchell Simmons are expected to be mainstays for the group.
Linebackers — This side of the ball may be where Peete’s graduation is felt more. Carson Kelly will play a bigger role, and Taylor has moved over and looked well in preseason. The two outside linebacker positions will be handled by committee as a number of players provide quality depth.
Secondary — There are no starters back from last year, and that made 7-on-7s a little more important as all the guys in the mix for playing time got some competitive reps even if they didn’t happen while wearing full gear. Jay Donaldson and Isaiah Woods will play safety, while at S CB - Conley and Kevin Hall will play cornerback.
Special teams — Aiden Pennington is back at kicker. Summars will be punter. Austin and John Williamson are both working to be long-snapper. Returning duties will be handed out just before the season starts.
