Quick hits
The Indians might’ve lost the largest group of seniors from last year’s team as 22 players graduated last year including Tennessee signee Javonte Smith.
North Side is a beneficiary of the TSSAA’s one-time transfer rule as multiple players have transferred into the Reservation from South Side, Liberty and Fayette-Ware.
The players in the locker room are glad to have the new players on the team because some of them are also from Jackson and have played against each other since their days in youth league, so they’re glad to have them as part of their group instead of lining up against them.
The defense will have a new look with nearly every starter gone from last year’s team. And a lot of the in-game reps went to the seniors too, so not as much experience moving up into those starting roles as other teams might have.
North Side is the fourth school Woodrow Lowe Jr. has been the head coach for, and with this being his fourth year with the Indians, it’s the second time he’s made it past three years with a program. In 14 total seasons so far as a head coach, eight of his teams have made the postseason, but none of those teams have won a playoff game yet.
Position groups
Offensive line — Even with the losses of the graduating class, one good thing about this group is all five projected starters started at some point last year because of injury. Four of them are seniors including Landon Sheppard, who has a scholarship offer from Middle Tennessee State. Gregory Jelks, Zack Morton and Chandler Nesbitt are also in this senior group. The one junior, Zack Davis, is the left tackle.
Backfield — Troy Jeter has the potential to be the best running back in Jackson as a sophomore with a legitimate 40-yard time of 4.4 seconds (that could make him the fastest player in West Tennessee). He didn’t play any varsity last year but was a big reason the JV team went undefeated. Quarterbacks include Wade Lowe and Braxton Boyd, and they each bring different talents to the position. Hunter Fuchs will be the fullback.
Receivers — Jacavion Joy is a first-year starter but probably already a leader for the group. Isaiah Bradley is another athlete with a lot of ability who can be a threat for a big gain.
Defensive line — Isaiah Burton will be an edge guy who’s also a returning starter as a senior. Bryson Echols is another standout in this group that will also include everyone who plays on the offensive line as they will add depth here.
Linebackers — Cason Anderson, Isaiah Bradley, Hunter Fuchs, Tavaris Fuller and Zaden Ross Smith are all looking to get playing time in at least one of the positions in this group at some point each game.
Secondary — Jordan Cathey is a strong safety who started some last year. Coriah Fulgrum played a lot on special teams and has gotten some reps at cornerback but has never started there. Jacavion Joy, Zack Davis and Greg Davis Markell Robinson will all see some time at cornerback.
Special teams — Ben Mendez is returning at kicker, but freshman Alex Gomez has some serious strength behind his foot for some long field goals that could prove a quality weapon for the Indians. One of those guys will also punt. Fuchs will handle long-snapping.
