Quick hits
After being very young last year, especially up front, there’s a lot of experience coming back including nine on the defensive side of the ball.
The Eagles were region champions two years ago, so the older players know what it takes to compete at a championship level in this league.
Scoring was difficult most weeks for the Eagles last year. In their two wins, they scored a combined 108 points. In their eight losses, their scoring total was 59 points.
The Eagles are enjoying life on campus right now since their new indoor facility is complete. They had to do a lot of moving around this time last year as construction crews and their work on getting the facility built forced the team to move practice around much more than usual.
Some of the Eagles’ oldest rivalries are in this region as South Side, Lexington and Hardin County are in their top five list of most played opponents. McNairy Central, Bolivar and Camden are frequent opponents that aren’t on the schedule this year.
Position groups
Offensive line — Rhett Young is a senior who will split time between center and guard. Luke Wilson will play the left tackle position. Zayden Crayton and Toby Simmons will play on the right side of the line. Simmons is 6-feet-6-inches and 315 pounds. Garrett Blankenship will also play center, while Peyton Cole, a junior, is coming back from a torn ACL last year.
Backfield — Sophomore Isaiah Armstrong has potential to be a breakout star for the Eagles. Jatorijon Brown is a junior that brings experience back in carrying the ball. Chase Daniel is a good all-around athlete that will play multiple positions. Greyson Stewart is a sophomore who could be the starting quarterback.
Receivers — Jordan Hunt is a senior that’s 6-feet-2-inches and runs a 4.6-second 40-yard dash. So he’s got speed to do some damage. Blake Haltom is a sophomore who could have a breakout year.
Defensive line — Luke Wilson and Rayjon Sparkman will be the main guys making tackles up front, but Crayton and Cole will be there plugging gaps too.
Linebackers — Chase Craft and Roman Smith are both really working hard and had good offseasons, while Ethan Talley is a junior that will be solid there too.
Secondary — Daniel, Haltom and sophomore Johntae McNeal make up the bulk of the experience returning in the defensive backfield, while junior Chance Burton works his way back from a torn meniscus suffered in Week 2 last year.
Special teams — Brandon Harris will be the kicker and punter, while Hudson Lewis will handle much of the field goal kicking duties.
