Quick hits
Derek Carr is in his third season leading the Tigers. In his first year, the team was one of the younger teams in West Tennessee, and their youth was apparent in their results and play on the field. But they’re older now and more experienced with a number of three-year starters who won a road playoff game last year.
The development has been consistent over the last two years, and building on that this year has shown even more growth. The team is a typical Lexington team with a lot of size and strength, but they now are viewed as one of the more balanced offensive attacks in the region.
The playoff win at Haywood did give the team a confidence boost going into the offseason as they were able to work a little harder during winter workouts in the opening months after the season ended.
With the exception of that first year with Lexington with the young team, Carr’s teams at Milan and Lexington have always won at least one playoff game.
Position groups
Offensive line — Lexington lost three starters up front, but there were enough guys rotating in and out who are back this year that there shouldn’t be much of a drop-off in experience. Noah McCurrie and Micah Hughley are the returning starters. Brice Woodson, Aiden Seadson and Jordan Lindsey all return as tight ends, while Brady McCurl will probably play some H-back.
Backfield — Junior Ross Wilson is the returning starting quarterback with a year of experience. Fullback Levi Wolfe and running back Camerson Smith are back also. There will be some rotation between other players who will split time as wideout to add depth there.
Receivers — Eli Pearson, Cameron Smith and Avion Huddleston will be the main guys as Carr feels good about the depth in this area. Redding Wilson is moving over from defense to help out.
Defensive line — Trevon Fowler played in two games before he tore his ACL last year but still managed to lead the team in tackles for loss. Micah Hughley and Zack Grissom were all-region last year. Avion Huddleston and Woodson will be two of the main guys at defensive end.
Linebackers — Brady McCurl, Levi Wilkinson, Aiden Seaton or Cameron Crowe will be out there most of the time, and there are other guys who will rotate in and out.
Secondary — Redding Wilson, Cameron Smith and Maurice Johnson will rotate at the safety position, while Geno Carver, Eli Pearson and D.Q. McKnight should all be solid players at the cornerback position.
Special teams — Blaine Carrington is the kicker and worked with former Tiger kicker Conner Wood during the summer. Redding Wilson punted last year and figured out directional kicking with a good hang time.
