Quick hits

The Tigers will have a new home stadium this year after Tiny Knee Stadium was demolished right after the end of last season. The project won’t be done in time for the opening game, but the hope is for it to be done by the second scheduled home game against Bolivar.

Ripley’s Week 1 opponent, Peabody, was scheduled to be a home game this year, but because of the delay in the home stadium completion, the game will be played in Trenton. Since Trenton is getting a second home game out of it, the two teams have signed to play each other for two more years in 2027-28 with both games happening in Ripley.

The Tigers have had an offseason they’re probably ready to end and get into games after a coaching change was made right after the 2025 season ended. But then after a hire was made in January, that coach left less than two weeks later. Josh Northcutt was already an assistant on the staff and was ready to take the lead and everyone in the program likes having Northcutt in the head coach’s office.

Three of the team’s non-region opponents made the playoffs last year, and the fourth one was a win away from the postseason.

If the Tigers don’t get a win before Oct. 18, it will have been two years since they won their last game at St. Benedict in 2024.

Position groups

Offensive line — This group has a decent amount of depth. The only negative part is how many of them are having to play both ways, so that could drain their energy quicker than they’d like as games wear on. Northcutt likes the attitude and toughness everyone has shown so far though.

Backfield — This group is mainly a bunch of sophomores working and competing for playing time at both quarterback and running back positions. Northcutt said there are four to six guys who could be a part of the ground game.

Receivers — This group is young, but based on their performances in 7-on-7 camps all summer, he likes their ability to run routes and catch passes. But he said that can change once everyone puts full pads on and starts playing full tackle football.

Defensive line — This unit will be affected by the performance of the offensive line since it’s a lot of the same guys.

Linebackers — There’s good depth in this area with plenty of players to look to for reps as the games and season progress.

Secondary — This is a group full of nickel defenders who will be able to sneak closer to the line pre-snap if needed or get back and be ready for deep throws.

Special teams — These slots will mainly be filled with younger guys getting on the field and giving the older guys a rest for a minute between possessions.
