Quick hits
This is J.R. Kirby’s eighth season leading the Chargers, and this will be the first time he’s had a full coaching staff in his time there. He said it’s good to have more eyes and more experience to work with different player groups so coaches aren’t overextended working with guys and able to spend more time for instruction and correction during each practice.
The Charger offense set a school record last year by scoring 628 points. In 14 games, that’s an average of nearly 45 points per game. The defense averaged giving up about 15 points per game. Take out Westview’s combined 82 points in Covington’s two losses, and that defensive average drops to a little more than nine points per game.
Position groups
Offensive line — Kamari Williamson will be the new starter at tight end, and a couple more that will roll in. Steven Cunningham fills the role of wingback. Reed McMahon started last year as a sophomore at tackle. Hunter Jones is back as a guard. Jasper Lindley is the center and is a coach’s son that’s hard-nosed. Ethan Hodkins is the other guard who’s a legacy Charger that’s worked hard in the weight room. The other tackle is senior Jonathan Roman, who stands 6-feet-5 inches and had a good spring and offseason while replacing Aaron Gibson, who graduated.
Backfield — Tailback duties will be handled by committee. Those committee members will be Mack Wilson, Mackavion McKinney, freshman Tadarius Byers and Collin Wynfrey, who’s getting college looks as a 6-feet, 215-pound workhorse at fullback and tailback. Quarterback Kolby Labermeyer brings a different skillset compared to his predecessor, Walker Davis, but being the second-fastest player on the team will make the Chargers’ ground game even more difficult to guess pre-snap.
Receivers — Quindarious Alexander and Dekavian Adams will be the two main receivers. After that, a committee of Chargers will try to get passes thrown their way when passes are thrown.
Defensive line — The Chargers will be big up front. Jaylen Holland is a three-year starter at tackle. Brock McMahon is a freshman but is already 6-feet-2-inches tall and 330 pounds. Emory King is a two-year starter at defensive tackle.
Linebackers — Jermaine Allen is slated to be a returning starter, but he’s a big question mark after tearing his ACL Easter weekend. His rehab is going well though. Jeremiah Ware, Gavin McAlister and Sawyer King will be in the mix. McKylan Murray will be in the outside linebacker rotation. Kamari Williamson, Elon Weathers and Wynfrey are all versatile guys who can help up front defensively.
Secondary — Quindarious Alexander played some last year, and he got his first start in the semifinals and recorded an interception against Westview. Kavion Adams is back too. Younger guys like Mills Beasley, Adarius Murray and Eugene Burrell will play bigger roles this year.
Special teams — Milo Brock will probably be the kicker, replacing two-time all-stater Ty Waddell and his nearly 100 PAT makes. Kirby was searching for long-snappers earlier in the summer.
