Quick hits
Being the No. 4 team in the region each of the past two years, Bolivar has proven itself as the next team on the Region 7-3A totem pole between the perennial football powers at the top of the region standings. Woodmore wants to see more consistency from the team as they try to improve to competing better with the bigger teams.
Woodmore’s former program, Scotts Hill, actually played Bolivar four straight years from 2020-23 before Woodmore moved to coaching in Hardeman County. Scotts Hill won the first three games, and Bolivar took the fourth in 2023.
The Tigers are one of the teams who didn’t know going into the offseason who their quarterback would be this season, and that competition continued throughout the offseason. The good thing for everyone involved is that Woodmore said no matter which player won the starting job under center, the other would still be on the field somewhere.
Woodmore and his coaching staff appear to have done a quality job of recruiting their hallways along with developing the talent they already have in their fieldhouse as the Tigers appear to be bigger, stronger and faster across the board.
Position groups
Offensive line — The Tigers are set in the middle up front with Caden Maner at center and Aamaree Gibbs and Collier Howell at the guard positions. Guys like Victor Robinson and his little brother in the freshman class Cam Robinson (6-feet-2-inches and 280 pounds) could help there along with Kadarian Brown, who will mainly be a tight end that could also run and catch some passes.
Backfield — Denius Woods RB Jadarion Morrow and Andrikus Pirtle doing the bulk of the carries; QB - Cole Mayfield and Canaan Swift are a couple of returning seniors who are competing for the quarterback job. But no matter what happens, whichever player is not playing quarterback will be on the field, probably at receiver.
Receivers — The Tigers lost a lot of talent to graduation to replace here. Senior Chris Henderson is a shorter guy but is one of the faster players in the region with good hands. Zarion Jones is an even shorter guy, but he’s got some impressive numbers in the weightroom like a 325-pound squat and 195-pound bench, so he can take some hits. Kevin Gray looks more the wide receiver part at 6-feet-4-inches but he’s not played a lot of football, so the coaches are trying to bring him along. Other guys that will get some playing time include Jake Kelly, Ocavious Macon, Trip Malone and Isaiah Bunch. A couple more guys playing tight end are Trevor Gilliam and Trip Malone.
Defensive line — Gibbs is also a leader on this side of the ball. Collier Howell, Gilliam, Jayden Polk and Jontay Johnson will also be seeing a lot of snaps here.
Linebackers — Deniyus Woods will be a 4-year starter this year and averaged between 15 and 16 tackles per game with a couple of games with more than 20 tackles. Jadarion Marrow will be a two-year starter. Octevius Haddix and Trip Malone will be expected to help from the outside linebacker position. Andrekius Pirtle and Gilliam will get some reps there too.
Secondary — Colton Mayfield does a good job of getting everyone lined up in the defense based out of the 3-3 stack look. Elijah Waller will get runs at safety. Zeriyon Jones, Octavious Maco and Madarion Humphery will be guys who will see time back there too.
Special teams — While time was spent in the summer looking for a kicker, the Tigers were already set with a long snapper and returners. Zerioyn Jones is a threat every time he gets the ball.
