Quick hits
Peabody Golden Tide won the first eight games of the 2025 season and was tied for first in the region going into the final two weeks of the regular season. But the opponents in those two weeks were the eventual region champion and state champion. They took losses in those games and finished third in the region. They did win in the first round of the playoffs on the road, but that was their only win after the win streak.
Graduation hit the Golden Tide hard, particularly on the offensive side, but they also lost a productive running back in Ethan Agnew, who’d moved to Trenton after middle school from Humboldt and decided to return home.
With only four seniors on this team, the Golden Tide seem like they may be in a difficult position, but with the talent they have on the team - even if a lot of it is young and inexperienced in varsity football - they’re still going to be a favorite to make it to the playoffs as it will take a lot for the teams that didn’t make the playoffs last year to make up ground on Peabody.
The schedule is unusual for the Golden Tide as their first two games and their final two games are at home. They have a road trip in Week 3, a home game after that and then four straight road games. Originally, they were supposed to have only four home games before Ripley’s project for a new home stadium fell behind schedule, and that Week 1 matchup had to find another site.
There’s something to be said for the level of competition, but the Tide defense allowed a little less than nine points per game in that eight-game win streak. In the four games after that, when they went 1-3, Peabody allowed an average of 27 points per game.
Position groups
Offensive line — Isaiah Torres is a three-year starter up front at left guard and will be the leader there. Jacoby Jarnigan will be a first-year starter at center. Marcus Reynolds will be the right guard. Mason Connor will be the right tackle. Aiden Wilson will be the Tideman called upon to protect the blind side at left tackle.
Backfield — Michael Dunlap, Ashley Meadows and Jabonski Lennon will be the main guys handling duties at running back. Caleb Sims has come a long way, and Vowell said the coaches are proud of the work he’s put in to be the starting quarterback. Phillip Elliott will be his backup. Parker Greer will be fullback along with Harrison Moore and Bo Elliott.
Receivers — Tay Cannon is the only starter coming back here. Justin Wells is a sophomore that will probably start in the slot position. Gray Buchanan will probably line up at the X position, backed up by Barrett Rhodes and Mello Tyler.
Defensive line — Torres will be a tackle, while Wilson and Ashley Meadows will line up at end. Jackson Renkins will be the nose guard.
Linebackers — Mike Dunlap brings experience to the mike linebacker position. Jabronski Lennon will line up as the will backer. Machai Guyton will be the nickel backer dropping down into the box.
Secondary — Cannon will play cornerback with Gray Buchanan. Parker Greer will be the free safety as they are the three starters returning. Destin Wells will join them in the starting lineup at strong safety.
Special teams — Frank Elliott will be kicker and punter. Phillip Elliott will be long-snapper, and Cannon and Wells will be the main guys returning kicks and punts.
