Quick hits
The Tigers didn’t officially make the playoffs last year, but their Week 11 game at home against JCM on the night before Halloween (a Thursday) was essentially a playoff play-in game. The winner would travel to the champion of Region 8-2A, while the loser would begin preparations for basketball season. JCM won the game.
Blake Stigall has been the Halls head coach for the past three years after coaching with Pun Gardner at Ripley.
Gardner joined Stigall’s staff at Halls during the offseason after being relieved of his coaching duties at Ripley. Stigall said having Gardner on the staff with him is good because he understands the big picture of a program since he’s been the leader of a program, and they’ve been buddies since playing together in school at Westview.
Halls may have the tallest quarterback in rural West Tennessee as Jackson Booker stands at 6-feet-3-inches, which gives him a better-than-most ability to see receivers over his offensive linemen.
Halls hosting Lauderdale County neighbor Ripley keeps a longstanding tradition alive between the two schools - The Tiger Bowl. It’s an annual tradition in which Ripley’s purple Tigers and Halls’ black and gold Tigers meet on the field and give football fans all over the county a chance to watch both teams at the same time.
Position groups
Offensive line — Clyse Tittleton is part of the front line as a tight end who also plays on defense and led the team in tackles as a freshman. Jacorian Lattimore is another tight end who will help in blocking. Eli Harrell will be the strong tackle next to strong guard Ben Blackwood. The center position is being held down by Franklin Nelson while Nolan Throgmorton (guard) and Mekhi Ward (tackle) are on the weak side of the line.
Backfield — Jerry Driver is the starting fullback backed up by Tamiyon Gooch, both of whom have attended multiple prospect camps by invitation this summer. Senior Easton Apperson and Tradarion Crew will handle the bulk of running back duties. Jackson Booker first came out for football two years ago after transferring from Florida and being committed to just playing baseball, and he’s the starting quarterback now. Drake McGarrity is the backup.
Receivers — Jamarcus Moses caught quite a few passes last year, and Zack Ralston will be coming in to help out. Sawyer Tittleton has grown a bit in the past year and moves a little better and will play wing back, backed up by Cash Williams.
Defensive line — Mekhy Ward and Franklin Nelson will be the starters at defensive end, backed up by Tyon Gooch and Cash Williams. Lattimore will be the nose guard backed up by Steven Rogers Jr.
Linebackers — Jerry Driver and Drake McGarrity will be the linebackers on the strong side. Klice will be the starting mike backer, calling the defense as he’s been a leader on that side since his freshman year. Sawyer Tittleton will be on the other side backed up by sophomores John Glover and Ben Burger.
Secondary — This is an area where the coaching staff has moved some guys around. Kiestler Pipkin and Zack Ralston will be the cornerbacks, which will be a new position for Ralston. Easton Addleson will be the free safety, making the presnap checks getting other guys lined up. Jamarcus Moses has gotten stronger and better tackles in the box, so he’ll be the strong safety.
Special teams — Tittleton and Apperson have kicked in the past, and Tittleton has also been the long-snapper, so the coaching staff have been evaluating their options there.
