Quick hits

It’s been 39 years since Middleton football won more games than it lost. That’s something the program has done six times in its entire history that began in 1968. Head coach James Davis II is a Middleton graduate who played for his predecessor Craig Harris about 15 years ago. His father, James Davis Sr., helped coach back then and continued to until last year when he got to coach with his son for three years.

Middleton had to make a change on its schedule because its Week 2 opponent last year, Thrasher, Miss., closed down as a school in the offseason. The replacement school, Falkner, is playing its final year of football before it gets swallowed into a county school consolidation in Mississippi.

Middleton is another small school that struggles to have enough guys out for practice each day to put 11 on 11 in scrimmaging. Davis has figured out how to work around that, but he says practice goes a lot better when there’s a full 22 guys on the field to work with.

The Tigers weren’t far from a 5-5 record in the regular season last year. Of their six losses in the regular season, they had one loss where they fell 7-6 and had an opportunity late to take the lead. If they’d won that game, they’d have been 5-5 and finished third in the region. Then they’d have been a game away from finishing runner-up and hosting a playoff game along with finishing the regular season with more wins than losses.

Davis likes the commitment he’s got from the guys that are coming to practice all summer. He said it’s something to build around, but he’d like to have more guys come out for football and stick with it.

Position groups

Offensive line — It’s been a while since Middleton has had the size up front the Tigers have this year. That size is young, but there’s a lot of potential too. He hopes the younger guys will also learn quickly that what a team and its players do in the offseason is one of the biggest indicators of their success in the season.

Backfield — There will be a new starting quarterback this year, but he will be handing off and possibly throwing to experienced running backs and fullbacks. Brandon Lynn and Kylan Taylor are the two main ball-carriers. Jamon Johnson is a junior who will be quarterback.

Receivers — This group has the most experience back, and Davis likes their potential. Colton McLehomme and sophomore Brody Elkins have a chance to make a solid impact for the Tigers. Amari Davidson is another sophomore who understands the playbook and is one of the more natural defensive players.

Defensive line — With a roster as small as Middleton’s is, the defensive line is in the same situation as the offensive line, so the same group of guys will play both ways over the course of the season.

Linebackers — The backs carrying the ball on offense will be the Tigers charged with trying to stop the opposing ball carriers from getting down the field and moving the chains.

Secondary — The guys who will be catching passes from the quarterback will be the guys hunting down passes and trying to intercept them or knock them down.

Special teams — Davis had not landed on some of the special teams players later in the summer but said he’ll have a group lined by the time Week 1 arrives.
