Quick hits

Head coach Eric Swenson was the offensive coordinator the first time Huntingdon won a state championship in 2003. Since coming back as head coach in 2008, the Mustangs had been runner-up once, made it to the semifinals twice and had four perfect regular seasons before the program finally broke through as champion again last year.

Swenson left Huntingdon to be the head coach at Hickman County for three seasons before coming back. That third team was his only one there that made the playoffs, but they got to the quarterfinals. Every Swenson-coached team has made the playoffs since 2007, and not only have they all made it past the first round, but eight finished in the second round, which means 12 has made it to at least the quarterfinals.

The early season loss to Milan was a good thing as not just the loss itself, but the point differential of the loss also, forced the players and coaches to look at what they weren’t doing as well as they could and commit to a higher standard for themselves. It worked because they allowed 34 points in that loss. It took six games before the defense allowed a combined 34 points after that.

The season is almost split into two. The Mustangs’ first four games are all at Paul Ward Stadium with the fifth one happening in Week 6, which means Senior Night will be on Sept. 25 because all four games in October will be on the road. But the opposite happened in 2025.

Huntingdon will probably be the easy pick for many across the state outside their locker room to repeat as champions with 16 returning starters from last year’s team.

Position groups

Offensive line — This is the area where the Mustangs have the most people returning. Bryson Whiteside is moving from strong tackle to blocking back. Braylon Davis will be moving to strong tackle. Gavin Gray will be the strong guard. Haven Dillehany will be back as the center after starting there last year as a sophomore. Ashton Donald will be the quick guard. Maddox Holmes will be the tight end.

Backfield — Kenton Smith will be the quarterback, and Hayes Eubanks is slated to be the starting tailback. Kayshun Carter will line up some in wingback and tailback, while Colt Wood will also be in the tailback rotation.

Receivers — Kimante Strayhorn, Xay Connley and Garvin Kee will all be targets for Smith in throwing situations.

Defensive line — Tay Strayhorn is back after having a lot of tackles for loss in his first year playing football last year. Whitside, Davis and Caden King will also be starting up front here.

Linebackers — Holmes, Kee and Wood competed all summer for one of the starting positions at outside linebacker, while Eubanks was settled in at the other starter position. Gavin Gray is a solid pick to start at inside linebacker while others are fighting for playing time there.

Secondary — Kayshun Carter and Lucas Smith will be the safeties. Juniors Ayden Woods and Kimanti Strayhorn will probably be the starters at cornerback. Zay Connley and Garvin Kee will find their way up the depth chart here or at outside linebacker. Colt Wood is in a similar situation.

Special teams — Grayson Anderson is coming back as kicker. Eubanks will be the punter. They’re developing a new long-snapper, while Keyshawn Carter and probably Kenton Smith will handle returning duties along with Kimanti Stayhorn.
