Quick hits
Brandon Gray enters his final season to coach his son, quarterback J.C. Gray. While J.C. has played quarterback at times in certain situations, this will be the first time he’s been the starting quarterback going into the season.
After two decades of coaching, Gray’s entire coaching staff is made of Adamsville alumni, most of which played for him in the past, including the town’s chiefs of police and fire.
All of Adamsville’s non-region games are either neighbors that are Class 4A schools or teams from Mississippi.
The coaching staff has appreciation for the way this year’s seniors have led this team during the offseason and have pushed them to work harder on each drill in each practice preparing for the upcoming season.
Position groups
Offensive line — Center Ethan Thompson was all-region last year. Right tackle Zander James got stronger with experience. Guards Braydon Jones and Jacob Dooley will flank Thompson on the inside of the line. Left tackle Tommy Gambrell will try to protect the quarterback’s blind side. Backfield - J.C. Gray will get the nod to start at quarterback, while the running back will be handled by a committee of Cardinals - Deandre Calhoun, Caleb Size and Deuce Garner will probably be the guys getting the bulk of the carries. Laydon Johnson is a junior that can play any position up front line up at full back.
Receivers — Lucas Hughes will be a senior that caught 28 passes for 400 yards and four touchdowns in 2025. Bryce Austin will get time on the field as a sophomore. Deuce Garner was hurt last year early in the season but has looked good in the offseason. Avery Story, Braylon Walker, Henry Hopper, Ford Frank, Jackson Johnson and Hunter Grisham will probably all see time running routes.
Defensive line — Dooley, Gambrell, James and William Killingsworth all have experience up front. Landon Langworth is a strong player moving up from linebacker to defensive end. Paxton Noble, James Rainer, Alan Roberts, Landon Walker, Damien Lard and Easton Thompson are all younger guys who have had productive offseasons.
Linebackers — Asa Story was the region linebacker of the year with 108 tackles. Jackson Johnson started as a freshman last year and recorded 80 tackles. Lucas Hughes had 63 tackles and four interceptions. Hopper, Tucker Grommell, Eli Kaiser, Eli Finley and Keon Irons had a good offseason.
Secondary — Hughes and Gray are returning cornerbacks, while Braylon Walker may get playing time there. Garner started at safety, and Austin Warren and Tyler Bentley could rotate in there as well.
Special teams — Reed Brown is the kicker and was 29-for-35 in PATs. Gray is the returner who averaged more than 20 yards per return, although some of the other younger guys could help in that role while he concentrates on quarterback.
