Quick hits
Robert Akins either got promoted or demoted from last school year to this year, depending on how you look at it. He was the head of the school last year and had been for the last few years after a stellar four-decade career of coaching football. When they decided to make a coaching change, they came close a couple times to making a hire. Then the search committee came to him asking if he would do it. He wanted to have one more run with it.
Last year’s team only had two seniors, which probably contributed to the less-than-stellar season the Vikings had last year as they were the younger team on the field in every one of their games.
Last year’s youth could help this year as the Vikings have one of the largest numbers of returning starters in all of West Tennessee with 17. They’re in a unique spot in that there’s not a lot of competition for players in their immediate area as they’re far enough outside Memphis city limits and Shelby County that they’re not a frequent target of would-be recruiters for different programs in that area.
Kicker Ben Brewer is a bright spot for the Vikings. He verbally committed in late July to kick for Vanderbilt University in the Southeastern Conference.
Even though this is his first head coaching job in rural West Tennessee, Akins is the coach who’s been coaching the longest as this will be his 41st season as a head coach. Most of his career has been in East Tennessee around Chattanooga and North Georgia. He coached some in Memphis too.
Position groups
Offensive line — Sam Armino will be filling the role at left tackle, while Brady Landsdale will be next to him at the guard position. Walker Graves will be in the middle playing center. Drake Long and Jacob Buchanan will be on the right side playing guard and tackle, respectively. Parker Moss and Dalton Green will share time at tight end.
Backfield — Clay Anderson will be the wing back backed up by Hardy Armour. Jay Brant, Harrison Douglas and Grayson Raspberry fill in the role of halfback. Harris Armour will be the quarterback with Henry Armour backing him up. Carter Sheridan will be the main fullback, while freshman Landon Graue and Hardy Armour will help out there.
Receivers — In Fayette Academy’s version of the flexbone, receivers are used in different ways. Henry Armour and freshman Carter Kirkland were among the most versatile athletes during preseason there.
Defensive line — Guys mentioned in the offensive line group - Graves, Long, Buchanan and Green - will be the primary ones up front engaging opposing offensive lines and trying to open lanes for their linebackers if they can’t get through to the backfield themselves.
Linebackers — Hardy Armour and Moss will be the outside linebackers, while Landsdale and Sheridan will handle things on the inside.
Secondary — Henry and Harris Armour will be the primary guys at cornerback. Anderson and Jake Brandt will handle safety duties.
Special teams — Ben Brewer will be kicker and punter, while Henry Armour and Anderson will be the main returners. Josh Kizer is a talented newcomer who may help some at punting. Green and Brandt will be the main guys getting the look for long-snapper.
