Quick hits
The Lions have one of the top non-region schedules in the region with Riverside, Huntingdon and McKenzie on the schedule - who all have won a state championship in the last few years, and Dyersburg, a team that’s made it to the semifinals recently before they get into region play.
Region 6-1A extends the footprint of West Tennessee football almost all the way to Nashville as Sycamore, Fairview and Harpeth are all in the Nashville metro area. Camden is the only West Tennessee team in this region.
There’s a lot of starting experience returning this year, particularly on offense, to give the Lions a chance to be optimistic about moving the ball consistently down the field and into the endzone.
Head coach John Ross Hudson grew up nearby, playing high school ball at Henry County and coaching for nearly a decade at Lexington before getting his first job as a head coach in Benton County for the Lions.
The non-region schedule did prepare the Lions well for region play last year as they were 1-4 halfway through the regular season then won four of their next five games to claim third place in the region.
Position groups
Offensive line — There’s a good amount of experience back up front. Cayden Wood has been a starter since his freshman season and can play right guard or right tackle. Eli Kee is a three-year starter that’s scrappy and has improved every year to being a leader and possibly the best blocker on the team. Caleb Martin’s transformation from freshman year to now is unrecognizable because of how much he’s grown to where he was a starter last year as a junior. Hayden Kee dropped 60 pounds after he got serious about his nutrition and activity, and he said he feels like a different person. He moves like a different player. James McNattle is pushing older guys this summer on the depth chart. Isaiah Goodwin is an H-back/tight end who’s started since he was a freshman. He’s a senior now.
Backfield — Antwan Banks has played slot receiver in the past and is moving to running back. Bradley Coleman is built more like a fullback and had a good offseason. Jake Reynoldson is coming back for his second full season starting at quarterback. He started some in 2024, had the full-time job in 2025 and is bringing all that experience back in 2026.
Receivers — The Lions have a solid group here. Basketball player Cade Johnson is an athletic guy who’s come out for football the last couple years and has begun to pick up the concepts of being a wide receiver. Hunter Jackson, another basketball Lion, has come out and shown he can contribute as well. Canyon May didn’t play a lot last year but has grown bigger and stronger and could be a vital role player on the edge.
Defensive line — A lot of guys named with the offensive linemen will be named here too. Eli Kee has moved from linebacker to defensive tackle. Hayden Kee will be nose guard. Caden Wood will be defensive tackle with his aggressive play.
Linebackers — Isaiah Goodwin is a go-to guy defensively at 6-feet-4-inches tall with long arms. He’s moved from defensive end to outside linebacker. Canyon May will also be a part of the linebacking rotation. Trenton Hagler will be fighting for a spot. Harley Stuflam has come on in the last year or so and had a good spring. Bradley Coleman leads a group of experienced inside linebackers. Clayton Anderson can play inside or outside linebacker.
Secondary — Banks played every game at safety last year as a sophomore. Reynoldson moved to safety, and that helps with his high football IQ. Luke Arnold can play either safety or cornerback and could be called upon in different situations to do either. Johnson’s combination of length and speed helped him have a good spring and pick up on playing defense. Cade Lowe is probably the smallest kid on the team but is among the hardest workers, and it shows.
Special teams — Easton Crunkright will be the long-snapper. Banks and Bradley Coleman will be the main returners.
