Quick hits
The final win/loss record for the Lions have been a steady decrease from year to year since 2022 with 2025 being the low point with no wins, dropping from six wins and a playoff berth in 2022 to three wins in 2023 and one win in 2024.
The Lions are looking to turn their fortunes around under a different regime as Kyle McDaniel takes over for the program. He was named interim coach at the end of April and will keep that title through the season with administration planning to make a decision after that.
McDaniel has spent the summer trying to lay a foundation for the program and raise the standard for the program that finished without a win.
The players are working together more as a team, including punishments like running when one player fails to succeed in a drill and working together as an entire group in doing the small things of a program like keeping the fieldhouse clean and keeping the equipment straight.
That work and suffering together has built a greater brotherhood among the players. That brotherhood leads to a greater likelihood for some of the older players to step up as leaders in the locker room and in the huddle, which the coaching staff said will hope fill in some of the instructional gaps that might’ve fallen behind in 2025.
Position groups
Offensive line — Marco Pedraza and Cayden Henderson are two returning starters that have worked hard all offseason and have gotten stronger. Ridley Clenney is a junior playing for the first time since he was in eighth grade but is already contributing in preseason.
Backfield — In McDaniel’s version of the flexbone offense, there was a quarterback competition between Xavier Holmes and Bryce Boon all summer. McDaniel said no matter who wins that competition, both guys will be on the field somewhere. Colton Clark will probably get the lion’s share of the carries for the Lions since he’s the biggest running back, and Khadi’Dyn Bedwell will be his main backup.
Receivers — Bentley Parker is the best in this group returning. He’s a three-year starter that’s grown immensely from his sophomore season and will try to bring the rest of the group to at least his level.
Defensive line — Koleton Cark is a player that had a lot of tackles for loss. McDaniel said he’s a tough athlete that will hopefully inspire similar toughness in the rest of the group.
Linebackers — David Whitaker is a big-time returner and one of the overall leaders of the team. He will be called upon to lead on the field and in the locker room to help.
Secondary — Avery Holmes returns at safety and sets everything up from the back end of the defensive pre-snap. Hade Britt returns as a cornerback.
Special teams — Curtis Williams will be the kicker in his second year to play, and he has a strong leg. Mylan Wilson will be the punter. Marco Pedraza will be the long snapper, while Britt and Holmes will handle most of the returning duties.
