Quick hits
Munford has an unusual schedule in that not only do the Cougars have seven home games, but those games are the first seven games on their schedule. That means their Senior Night will be Oct. 9.
Four of Munford’s 12 games finished as one-possession games. The Cougars went 2-2 in those games. They averaged nearly 35 points in the point differential in their 10 wins.
The Cougars end the regular season against the team that gave them their one regular-season loss last season.
Position groups
Offensive line — Nathan Messer was a tight end last year but is moving to H-back this year. He can deadlift 635 pounds, so he’s got strength to move people around. Connor Boswell is a junior that has potential to play in college with 320 pounds on a six-feet-3-inch frame. Jake Mullins has a dozen college offers from schools like Navy and Ivy League colleges. Cale Dill is a smart senior with a 30 on the ACT but can also bench 300 pounds. Joseph Corchrin is a smart player up front with the highest algebra average in the school. Brody Materna, Jeremiah Burgess, Kingston Dorks will also see time up front too.
Backfield — Tay Starks was a Mr. Football finalist as a sophomore last year playing running back. Jean Smith will also get some carries. Dickson Mooneyham is the returning starter at quarterback. Daquavion Bell will back Mooneyam up. Javenion Smith transferred in after making the all-area team for the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Ty Jones will get carries as a sophomore. Jamarion Turner is a freshman but has proven speed as a middle school state track champion.
Receivers — Treyshon Jones is 6-feet-2-inches and 181 pounds and has quality hands with speed to get away from the defense. Munford’s flexbone offense uses the running backs as receivers too in certain situations. Jean Smith, Jamarion Turner and Jaquan Bell will be a part of that group.
Defensive line — Messer will be putting his strength to use at the nose guard position. Around him will be Damontay Jones, who’s 250 pounds, Dakota Lumm at 6-feet-3-inches and 275 pounds, Burrell and Dill.
Linebackers — Braxton Grant is a senior who’s entering his third year starting. Caleb Polk will be entering his second year as a starter and is a unique blend of strength and intelligence at the position. Garrett Ballard and Trevor Starks will also be helping out here.
Secondary — Daquavion Bell will start at cornerback, and Jones will be one of the leaders here too. Amari Bell is a sophomore who will get some playing time, while Turner and Ross will fight for playing time too. Jakeem Smith is a senior transfer in who is the front runner to start at free safety, and Ty Jones will start at weak safety. Strong safety had good competition during the summer between Larry Anderson III, who was moving back from cornerback, and D.K. Burton.
Special teams — Lucas Crowell is entering his third year starting as kicker, and Houston Yount will be the punter.
